Every banknote in your wallet has a hidden journey. It began as cotton or paper, passed through high-security printing presses, travelled in armoured vans, sat inside energy-hungry ATMs, was counted and authenticated by machines, and will eventually be shredded and disposed of. Multiply that by billions of notes, year after year.
As money goes digital, a natural question follows: can the way we pay become kinder to the planet? The honest answer is yes, but only if digital systems are designed thoughtfully. This article looks at what the evidence actually says, where the real gains are, and what it takes to build finance that is both efficient and sustainable.
The physical footprint of cash
Cash is so familiar that its environmental cost is easy to overlook. It includes:
- Raw materials such as cotton, paper, inks and security features.
- Manufacturing in specialised printing facilities.
- Distribution and logistics, moving currency between central banks, currency chests, bank branches and ATMs.
- ATM operation, which consumes electricity continuously.
- Processing and authentication, including sorting, counting and counterfeit detection.
- Replacement and disposal of worn-out notes.
What India spends to print money
The Reserve Bank of India's annual reports provide a sense of scale.
- The RBI's expenditure on security printing rose nearly 25% to about ₹6,372.8 crore in 2024-25, compared with about ₹5,101.4 crore the previous year, mainly due to a higher indent for printing banknotes.
- According to reporting on the RBI's Annual Report 2025-26, the volume of banknotes in circulation rose 10.5% in 2025-26, and the value of currency in circulation grew about 11.4%.
Cash remains deeply important in India, and it is not going away. But these figures show that producing and maintaining physical currency is a large, ongoing industrial operation, with material, energy and logistics footprints to match.
What the best research on cash tells us
The most rigorous public study of the environmental footprint of cash comes from the European Central Bank, which in December 2023 published a Product Environmental Footprint study of euro banknotes as a payment instrument, using 2019 data.
Its key findings:
- The average environmental footprint of banknote payments was 101 micropoints per euro area citizen in 2019, roughly equivalent to driving a car for about 8 kilometres, or about 0.01% of a European citizen's total annual consumption footprint.
- The biggest contributors were energy consumption of ATMs and transportation, followed by processing by national central banks, paper manufacturing and banknote authentication in shops.
- Because banknotes last a long time and are used for many payments, production had less impact than distribution and circulation.
- The Eurosystem reported reducing the ATM environmental footprint by 35% between 2004 and 2019 through energy efficiency improvements, and has moved to sustainable cotton.
The study also examined card payments and found their main footprint drivers were the extraction of raw materials for point-of-sale terminals and the chips in cards.
Two lessons stand out:
- Per payment, the footprint of cash in Europe is small but real, and it is dominated by logistics and machines rather than paper.
- Digital payments are not footprint-free either. Terminals, cards, devices and data centres all have impacts.
That nuance matters. Sustainable finance should be built on evidence, not slogans.
Where digital currency can genuinely help

Digital banking eliminates much more than banknotes:
- Paper account statements and passbooks.

- Courier-based trade documents, now increasingly replaced by legally recognised electronic trade records.
Efficient settlement
Real-time digital settlement reduces duplicated processing, manual reconciliation, and the repeated storage and transmission of records across disconnected systems.

Credible sustainability claims must also account for the costs of digital infrastructure.
Data centres and networks
Every digital transaction uses computing power and network energy. Scale magnifies this.
Devices
Smartphones and terminals require materials and energy to manufacture and eventually become electronic waste.
Ledger design choices
Not all blockchains are equal. Energy-intensive proof-of-work consensus used by some public cryptocurrencies is very different from permissioned ledgers used in institutional finance, which do not require competitive mining and can run on efficient infrastructure.

- Minimise data. Store only what is needed, and avoid duplicating records across systems. Data minimisation is good for privacy and for energy.
- Go paperless by default. Digital statements, e-invoicing and electronic trade documents should be the standard.
- Extend device life. Design apps that work well on older and basic phones, reducing pressure to upgrade.
- Measure honestly. Publish methodology and avoid claims that cannot be substantiated.

ESG is not only about carbon and trees. The "S" and the "G" matter just as much.

Digital currency that works offline, on basic devices, and for people in remote areas can bring more citizens into the formal economy. Programmable benefits can ensure subsidies reach the intended beneficiaries.

Five questions to ask any green payments claim
As sustainability becomes a marketing message, it helps to know how to test claims. Whether you are a bank, a business customer or an investor, ask these questions of any provider that says its payments are greener.
- Compared with what? A claim that digital payments are greener should specify the baseline, such as cash, cards or legacy bank transfers, and the assumptions behind the comparison.
- What is included in the boundary? Does the assessment include devices, data centres, networks and terminals, or only the most flattering part of the lifecycle?
- What consensus mechanism is used? If a ledger is involved, is it permissioned or low-energy, or does it rely on energy-intensive mining?
- Where does the energy come from? Are nodes and data centres powered by renewable sources, and is that verified?
- Is the methodology public? Credible studies, like the ECB's banknote footprint assessment, explain their methods and data so others can scrutinise them.
Asking these questions protects organisations from greenwashing and rewards providers who do the hard work of measuring honestly. It also pushes the whole industry toward better data, which is the foundation of any real improvement.

The best available evidence shows that cash has a real, measurable environmental footprint, driven mainly by logistics and machines, and that digital payments have footprints too.
